first - third grade

Ms. Genell Penn,
1st Grade
Ms. Penn holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of the District of Columbia and an M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University. She’s been teaching at Ludlow-Taylor for four years. Prior to coming to Washington DC, she taught in Prince George’s County Public Schools for six years. She enjoys having small classes at Ludlow-Taylor. It makes her day when a student has that “light bulb experience” and they are happy to share it. When she's not at Ludlow-Taylor, Ms. Penn enjoys reading ("everything"). She also participates in a book club that meets monthly.
Ms. Penn explains, "I teach because I love to learn. I hope that as an educator I am passing on my passion for learning new things to my students."
Mr. Jason Banks, 2nd Grade
Mr. Banks is a graduate of Howard University's School of Education. He has been teaching for six years both locally and internationally. He began teaching third grade in Washington, and continued his career at the high school level for the next four years. He spent last year teaching English to secondary students in northern Uganda. This is his first year at Ludlow-Taylor.
Mr. Banks started teaching because of his own passion for learning. "I have never done work as fulfilling as giving a child the tools he or she will need to be successful in life." He is excited about the Reggio Emelia method being implemented at Ludlow-Taylor, in part because of his own experience with the Arts. "The musical training I received as a child had a great impact on my academic studies. I know that the Arts can influence children greatly by giving them tools to understand the world both inside and outside the classroom."
Ms. Sharnette Gordon, 3rd Grade
Ms. Gordon earned both her B.A. in Political Science and her Master's degree in Elementary Education from Howard University. She has been at Ludlow-Taylor for 12 years. Born in Jamaica, she grew up in Albany, NY. Reading, traveling and cooking are favorite hobbies.
